Love Our Planet!
A friend gave me this card with a very thoughtful gift before launch and I couldn’t not take it with me to space. I just thought it was so perfect, so I stuck it in my crew notebook and took it with me. It fit right in at the window of the Cupola.
When I left the space station after my mission last year I didn’t think it would be possible to see anything more beautiful than I had already seen through the windows in the Service Module and the JEM (Kibo Japanese Experiment Module), but boy was I wrong. I did know that we were going to have something special to look forward to with the views the Cupola would offer, but I never really imagined how impressive it would be.
It was impressive on a number of levels. On a very basic level it further reinforced how much I love our planet. Even a little peek out the corner of any window can surprise you and suck you into the beauty. But when you get a horizon-to-horizon, colorful, glowing, curvature of the Earth in your face view like the Cupola offers – you honestly can be overwhelmed by it.
The more time you spend there, the more time you have to take it in, the more you can’t help looking beyond the beauty and thinking about the things that we struggle with down there – the view from on orbit is a fortunate one because all those things are not visible.
Very simply, we have an obligation to take care of our planet, take care of each other.
I’m very thankful I had the chance to see our home from space again. Love our planet!
