A Beacon For The Holidays

Welcoming our new crewmates, Oleg Kononenko, Andre Kuipers and Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station on Friday was wonderful, made all the more so as it came just before Christmas.
Anton Shkaplerov, Anatoly Ivanishin and I have been operating the ISS ourselves for over a month and are happy to have reinforcements, but also very glad to be able to spend the holidays with three good friends.
After they docked to ISS, we helped them settle in and then gave them a tour of the station. It’s a magnificent, nearly million pound spaceship jointly built by 15 nations from across the globe. In addition to being a one of a kind, world class research laboratory and humanity’s outpost in space, it’s a great testament to our ability as human beings to do extraordinarily difficult things when we work together.
Although Oleg, Don and Andre are all veteran ISS flyers, they, like we, were surprised by the view of earth from the Cupola, a 360 degree window on the world located in the Node 3 or Tranquility module.
To call that view breathtaking is no overstatement. From there, we have a virtually uninterrupted view for thousands of miles in all directions. We see auroras, volcanoes, coral atolls, and sweeping expanses of mountain ranges, desert and ocean. With the exception of nighttime city lights, what we don’t see is much evidence of our planet’s seven billion inhabitants or of the struggles that many face to survive. Tranquility’s window provides a view of earth as peaceful as it is beautiful.
On the day last week that our crewmates left planet Earth bound for the ISS, we were treated to another incredible sight -- just in time for the holidays. Comet Lovejoy, which unexpectedly survived a close encounter with the sun’s atmosphere, painted glowing swath of light millions of miles long across dense star fields of the southern night sky. During several of our daily 15 sunrises onboard ISS we’re able to see the comet in the predawn moments. We are certainly very fortunate to have the opportunity to fly in space and to see such splendid sights. We are also fortunate to represent space agencies and countries committed to mankind making a home in space and to applying what we learn here to make life better on earth.

Great post, and what a view of the comet! If only all of us on Earth could view the Earth from the Cupola - perhaps we'd have a little more peace on Earth at Christmas. Thank you for these wonderful posts! You never cease to amaze and inspire! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Buenas tardes Astros. Felíz Navidad. ¿Habéis estado hablando hace unos minutos con la Tierra en directo?. Yo escuché voces del ordenador y no tenía nada más que esta página, el facebook y el twitter abierto. Espero que el pavo estuviera guisado a gusto de todos. ¿llegó Santa Claus hasta allí para dejaros algún regalito?. En una semana estamos con el champán, las 12 uvas y las campanada del Año Nuevo. Una foto preciosa, espero que no se nos caíga nada en el coco.

Astros ¿Qué tal está el Espacio?. Recibimos muchas fotografías. Son muy bonitas. ¿Qué tal la Navidad?. Espero que el Año Nuevo lo paséis bien. Espero poder conectarme de nuevo para poder disfrutar de la fiesta. Por aquí por la tierra como siempre, Política diaria y crisis. Y las cosas casi igual en todos los sitios. Esperamos que los Planetas se queden en su sitio y no nos den mucho la lata. Esperamos que no se nos caíga nada en el coco. Habrá que ponerse cascos o gorros. Seguimos con frío, aunque aquí nunca nieva. Sale el sol. Bien pues ya he hecho mis labores casi todas esta noche. Así que si no queréis nada de mí me despido. Esperando estéis disfrutando de la aventura espacial. Os deseo felices sueño y Felíz día de los Inocentes que hoy celebramos en casi todo el Universo, ya que es todo nuestro. Os adelanto también Felíz Año Nuevo 2012. En la China y en el Japón, no se si será el año del gato o del ratón. Aquí es el 2012. Buenas noches

Astros aún sigo aquí. Oh es maravillosa vuestra felicitación. Y habéis puesto el árbol de Navidad. Los dos Astros que está boca abajo ¿son gemelos o mellizos?. Se les ha caído la peluca. Espero que de aquí a que vuelvan ya les haya crecido el pelo y que no se les caígan las ideas. Enseñarnos la nave por dentro un día de estos. Buenas noches Astros. ¿Habéis probado el roscón de Los Reyes Magos de Oriente?. A mí me tocó la sorpresa, así que este año tendré mucha suerte. Llegaron allí Los Reyes Magos a dejaros algún regalo. Yo espero que me traígan un pedruzco del espacio para hacerme un collar, una pulsera y un anillo. No lo olvidéis, seréis mis Magos del Espacio

Como me cuesta mucho tiempo entrar en este blog, quizás por la distancia no entro más a menudo. Bien os dejo con la paz y tranquilidad del Espacio Sideral. Espero que nos traigáis muchas cosas bonitas. Muy bonito el vídeo de felicitación de Navidad. Parecía el Portal de Belén con los Angeles colgando, María y José. Muchachos cuando vengáis por aquí haremos la fiesta del Roscón de Reyes Universal. La luna la tendré casi toda la noche enfrente de mi ventana. ¿Dónde estáis en Marte?. Eso no lo veo a no ser que sea el planeta que está detrás de la luna. Bien espero noticias. Escribidme algún mensaje. Hasta pronto

Buenas noches. El Astro Ron y la Nasa os envían un saludo.Great @FragileOasis Blog post w/ some amazing pics from #ISS CDR @AstroCoastie "A Salute to all the Coasties Out There". Como les coje más lejos os lo envío yo. No entiendo mucho el inglés, menos el ruso o el polaco. ¿Cómo va todo en el Espacio?. Aún no se muy bien si estáis en la luna, en júpiter o en marte. Yo en la tierra. Os espero en algún viaje vestidos de Astros. Os haremos una bonita bienvenida y os vestiremos de flamencos, yo me vestiré de flamenca. Es nuestro traje típico. Me gustó mucho el traje típico de las mujeres rusas. ¿Me traeréis unos trozitos de piedras preciosas del Espacio para hacerme unas alhajas bonitas?. Ya me voy a dormir que es muy tarde para mí. La luna la vemos estos días preciosa, blanca y brillante y muy redonda. Buenas noches. Estaré al tanto de las news cuando no esté durmiendo o haciendo mis tareas diarias y rutinarias.
